So how do you choose the right collar for your dog?
There are so many aspects to consider. This may sound crazy I know but before you continue think about what would be important to you if you had to wear it every day. The color would play a part and the material would be hugely important to aid comfort and avoid irritation. The strength of the collar would matter as well as how long it would last. The size is VITAL. What we really need to think about also is what are we going to be using it with. What type of lead and what will the collars primary use be? Control? Safety? Fashion? Identification?
Collars:
Buckle collars also known as flat collars can be found in most types of materials including leather, nylon, polyester and faux leather and/or suede. The buckles on these collars are really very similar to the one you would find on your 501 Levi jeans. The beauty about these sort of collars is, due to the buckle collar, they are easily adjustable so that they are comfortable and yet functional. Flat collars are the most popular types of collars on the market as a result of this. Buckle collars are also popular as it is so easy to attach an identity tag or medication tag onto them.
Stud collars are pretty similar to the buckle/flat collars above however in addition, they have studs on them to protect your Pup from being bitten on the neck by another more ferocious dog. You often see very stocky breeds wearing these, for fashion purposes, rather than safety.
The Elizabethan collar are the collars that you will often see pets walking out of the vets with. These are used to prevent dogs from scratching or biting their recent wounds. They are often put on by vets after an operation. Dogs in particular like to lick their wounds along with other areas of their body which means that infection could easily be spread to wounds, hence the collar is fitted. It is unlikely that your pup will like you much for putting an Elizabethan collar on them. They can spend hours trying to get it off and it can take them days to get used to it.
In addition to their buckle collar, it is more than likely that throughout your pets life they will at some point get fleas. There are fleas collars available for all pets. These collars are soaked in flea repellent and usually placed alongside their normal collar until the fleas have disappeared. The flea collars are usually very effective. There are a number of other types of treatment for your pets with fleas.
Buckle collars, stud collars, flea collars and Elizabethan collars are just the beginning. There are so many shapes, sizes and types of collars available. Again, it is important that you the owner weigh up the pros and cons of each collar. Function before fashion.

What You Will Get With A Pug
Before getting a Pug you want to consider both the positive and negative aspects. Health issues and shedding are two things to consider. Finally you should consider the issue to house training.
Pug dogs are an excellent breed of dog and many choose to add more than one to their household. However, as with all dog breeds, the Pug isn’t for everyone and every household. Therefore, it is best to consider the negative aspects of the breed before determining if they are the right dogs for you and your household. By properly selecting a breed that will work with you then you can make sure you have a positive experience. By doing your research and considering the negative aspects of a Pug dogs you will be able to determine if the personality and lifestyle of a put will fit with you and your household. So carefully and seriously consider the nature and characteristics of Pug dogs before you make the decision to add one to your household. The three most difficult areas include health issues, shedding and house training. Each will be discussed in more detail next.
Genetic health issues are common with Pug dogs. So the Pug is likely to need more veterinary care than other breeds. While this doesn’t mean that your Pug will have health problems, it is still a good idea to be prepared to spend a good portion of your time and money at the vet’s office. So if you don’t like the sound of making this type of twelve plus year commitment then you may want to consider another breed of dog.
Another common problem with Pug dogs is shedding. They will shed more than other breeds even with a short coat. So if you don’t want to deal with fur all over your house, car and clothes then you might want to consider another breed. You will just have to deal with the shedding of a Pug since there isn’t much you can do to reduce the shedding. The only way to keep the hair down is with regular cleaning in order to keep your house, car and clothes looking presentable.
The last issue to consider with Pug dogs is house training. When it comes to dog breeds, the Pug isn’t the easiest to train. Due to their small size they are more difficult to train than a larger breed dog, which has a greater capacity to hold. Although size isn’t the only obstacle, it is also the issue that Pug dogs tend to be very stubborn at times, making them less cooperative to train than other dog breeds. Those wh 1000 o have owned Pug dogs before or have a skilled training system in place from owning any breed of dog before, then training a Pug may be able to happen within three months of adding the dog to your household. However, in general you should expect to take at least a year or more to teach Pug dog proper house training techniques. So if you don’t want to deal with a puppy that isn’t house trained for a few years then you likely don’t want a Pug.

The metal choke collar
The metal toggle choke collar is basically the same as you regular choke collar with the major difference being that you can correct you dog easily by using the toggle while your dog is off-leash.

And finally, the seeing eye dog harness is designed so that the dog’s owner can hang on to the lead while the dog guides her to her destination. Unlike other leads, this lead is designed so that the dog can pull its owner forward as it walks instead of gently walking beside her on loose lead.

How Spooky Dogs and Scaredy Cats Have Fun on Halloween
Remember how fun it was to put on a costume and run around the neighborhood on Halloween? Halloween brings out your goofy, fun, creative side. I mean, who doesn’t love to act like a swashbuckler or prom queen once a year? I know some people who love Halloween so much that they even dress up their pets. For instance, my friend’s Pug makes a very cute bunny rabbit.
You want your pets to participate in all the fun, but Halloween can present some scary issues, including uncomfortable costumes, getting into candy and knocking over pumpkins. There are also spooky noises and unfamiliar people to deal with. Here are a few tips for having a safe and fun Halloween.

Remember how the costumes and masks you wore as a kid got hot and itchy? That’s how your pets may feel in a costume. Make sure no parts of the costume are blocking your pet’s eyes or nose, and that it’s not restricting the neck, chest or legs. Other foods you should avoid giving pets include macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins. Macadamia nuts can cause tremors and temporary paralysis. Grapes and raisins have caused renal failure in dogs.
Candy wrappers are another hazard. Trick-or-treaters of all ages may leave wrappers strewn around in their excitement to get to the candy. Remind candy lovers to pick them up – wrappers are a choking hazard for pets and can cause digestive problems.
Decorations
According to the National Retail Federation, roughly half of Americans buy decorations for Halloween. Just keep those festive decorations out of the way of the animals in the house or yard. Pets can easily get tangled in electrical cords, strings of lights or items that hang from doors, trees, or walls.
While you may see fun Halloween decorations around the house, your pets see exciting new chew toys. Even pumpkins with a candle inside can burn a child or animal or be tipped over and start a fire. Make sure to keep them out of reach.
Noise
Scary noises are a big part of Halloween, from the motion-activated talking skulls to the kids trying to spook each other with a scream. All this ruckus can be confusing for animals. Some just like to hide out, while others want to dive in and bark or play. For a pet who likes peace and quiet, find a calmer place. For one who likes to be in the middle of the fun, just keep an eye out for overstimulation, such as barking or jumping on people. Give that pet a break from the excitement in a quiet room or yard.

If you’re having a holiday gathering, check in with your guests to find out if they enjoy animal company or if they have allergies or other pet issues. Some people are simply afraid of certain animals because of some previous experience. Respect those feelings and make other arrangements for your pets.
Before trick-or-treaters and guest arrive, give your pets some extra attention to help them feel safe. Then keep an eye on how the people and pets are getting along. Be responsive if your pets are getting too excited or anxious; move them to a quieter spot and calm them down with soothing talk and strokes.

For most people, owning a dog is actually like having children. It is not enough that you love your pet; you have to think about its dietary needs, physical well being, grooming, etc. Most people also carefully deliberate on the kind of collar they want to buy for their beloved pets. Collars and leashes were made so that owners could train their dogs to behave; their use is not limited to going around the block to chase some stray cat or the postman.
Buckle Collars are usually made of either nylon or leather. These buckle collars close with a buckle, thus their name. A buckle collar is nice, simple yet elegant. These are easy to clean and they are very functional. For these reasons, they are the most commonly preferred type of dog collar.
Flea Collars
Fleas make short work of your dog’s health. Even if your dog eats 4 times a day or more, fleas multiply at a very rapid rate so that your dog becomes a live feed source for more fleas than your dog can handle.
Flea collars are laced with flea-repellent chemicals. The main purpose of such a collar is not leash, tag or collar charm anchorage but to control flea spread and infestation. Typically, the layers of the collar is soaked in or treated with the anti-flea solution to protect both the dog and the owner. Flea collars, however, are considered by most owners as more of a supplementary item rather than a necessity.
Elizabethan Collar
The Elizabethan collar was developed to prevent dogs (and cats too) from scratching their wounds which could be located in the neck and or head area. This type of collar reduces the risk of additional infection.
Slip Chain
Next we come to the Slip chain (Choke chain) which is a type of collar mainly used for training. This collar is usually made of nylon or a link chain. Its main distinguishing feature is the sloop rings attached at both ends of the collar. The leash is slipped through these rings. With proper pressure and leash manipulation, the slip chain collar will tighten. Letting go of the tension on the chain will loosen the loop around the dog’s neck.
This type of collar is best for owners who notice that their dogs are beginning to be hard headed and sometimes a simple whistle or a command is no good.
Muzzles
Now we come to the Muzzles, which are restraining devices that can be placed over a dog’s face to prevent it from biting. Muzzles are usually used when a dog has developed rabies or when the pup is teething. They are usually made of nylon, leather or plastic. They have an open area which allows the dog to breathe freely and comfortably. Take note however that some muzzles can be ineffective when its size or length is not a perfect fit to your dog. Velcro type muzzles are most effective because of their ease of use.

One of the hottest fashion accessories to hit the market recently are high end dog collars. And high end they can be, on the price that is! Some of the styles from Gucci, LV or Chanell can reach as much as $700! Ouch! These designer collars have always been around and always will. The average shopper simply doesn’t come into contact with them as they aren’t normally out on display.
Recently other designers, particularly those known for their handbags and accessories, have begun to get in on this lucrative market. Fashion names like Coach, Liz Claiborne, Burberry, Dooney & Bourke etc have brought the prices of these fashion dog collars down to earth. You will often find a small separate section of these adorable collars and leashes right beside your favorite hobo or tote bag!
And why not? People will pay $8 or more per gallon for bottled water so dropping a Ben Franklin on a fashion collar for your spoiled pooch is easily justified! For the fashion conscious, a matching designer dog collar to compliment your designer handbag, umbrella, scarf or other accessory is quite a statement! Not only will you both look great but little Fifi will get more of the much needed attention he craves and appreciate what you’ve done!
The quality of these collars is usually good. Of course, the $700 LV had better last a lifetime, and it probably will! The Claiborne collars are usually very affordable, under $15.00, but not of great quality and not much of a selection. The Dooney’s are usually under $40 but again, not much of a choice and the quality is not what you’d expect.
So the question remains, “Is there such a thing as affordable, stylish $30 – $50 designer collars that will hold up?” “Can I justify spending this?” Yes! The answer to that is hands down, Coach! They have a very nice variety and most of them, even the large collars, fall right within that range. Their dog collars are made of the same quality leather and hardware found in their handbags and the style tends to be a cross between high end and cute! The craftsmanship is superb. These collars aren’t going to tear or shred and they aren’t so stiff and thick as to strangle your little buddy either.
Most of the Coach dog collars come with some nice decorative hardware with room for engraving and there are many colors, sizes and styles to choose from. Much more to choose from than Dooney or Liz or anyone else. It seems this company saw the future of this fashion trend and didn’t waste any time capitalizing on it.
There are also a lot of no name companies putting very cheap “designer inspired” dog collars out on the market. They are generally not of good quality. Most of them have lots of rhinestones or fancy patterns but they will fall apart on you. The leather is not of good quality and the stitching is usually loose. For just a few more bucks you can get the quality, style and prestige that comes with a quality brand name collar.
So will Fifi be getting a high end dog collar from me? I think so! There’s plenty of these cute collars to choose from and it’s a fun little thing to do. Perhaps I’ll leave the shopping and selection up to my wife, but the Louis Vuitton is definitely out. The fact that he’s a French Poodle will not sway me on this one!

I was dodging raindrops and puddles as I walked the short distance to my office. As I was passing a local house, I saw an elderly woman standing near the entrance holding an umbrella over her little white puppy. Unfortunately, the umbrella wasn’t large enough to cover both her and the dog, so she was getting soaked.
Unable to withhold comment, I said, ‘Do you think he’ll mind if he gets wet?’ She responded, ‘Well the truth is that if I don’t hold the umbrella for him he gets angry and pouts and won’t eat his lunch.’ And, by dinnertime he’s absolutely unbearable!
Welcome to the world of the spoiled dog.
Although man’s best friend has always been his dog, the degree to which man has rewarded that friendship has quite possibly gotten out of hand. Evidence to support that statement can be found in the food we give our dog, the brand name ‘designer dog clothes‘ we put on their backs, the jewelry and special diets.
We send ‘Rover’ to counseling sessions with dog psychologists, clip/wash/curl their hair and make sure their nails are done so as not to embarrass them in front of their doggy friends.
How many of us have spent a restless night because ‘Missy’, our pug faced Pekinese, can’t seem to get comfortable in our bed or ‘Bull’, our six ounce Chihuahua, growls and snaps at us when we roll over on him.
Yes, for those of you that are disbelievers, many people do share their beds with their doggies. In fact, I’ve heard of many cases where couples sleep apart rather than crowd the dog. Have you ever tried to argue with a sleepy Doberman Pincher? Forget about it!
A thriving and lucrative industry has grown up around the pampered pet. Pet owners spend multi-millions each year on their little four-legged friends. Occasionally the news media will offer a blurb about the pet owner who spent thousands of dollars on a diamond studded dog collar.
Now let’s get down to diet – what can we feed ‘Prince’, the proud Rottweiler? To be honest, Prince isn’t all that fond of dry dog food. He’ll eat some of it, but only if mixed with some of that delicious home made lamb gravy he likes. And, just like most of us, he prefers light fare in the mornings; perhaps a few scrambled eggs and just a slice or two of crispy bacon.
No need to make a big fuss about dinner though, he’ll usually eat most of what you’re having, maybe before you get to it!
This scenario might involve a slight stretch, but it is certainly not too far fetched. We worry more about what our pets will eat, or if they’re ‘off their feed’, than we worry about what our kids eat. I wonder how it is we know that our kids will eat when they get hungry, but we can’t accept that this might apply to our dogs too.
We feel compelled to continue to offer our dogs a full menu from which to select and if all else fails, it’s time to schedule a trip to the Vet.
Speaking of Veterinarians – most of them now offer direct deposit so your entire paycheck can be directed right into their accounts. Veterinary expenses have gone through the roof and there’s no end to the elaborate medical procedures now being provided routinely.
A friend who complained for months about the cost of dental appliances (braces) for his kid willingly shelled out $2500 to fix his dog’s overbite because ‘Tiger’ appeared to be in discomfort when chewing on his rawhide bone.
Now that we’ve clearly established that we spoil our dogs, let’s offer a word or two in our own defense. Dogs love us without reservation. Scold them, treat then meanly, tease them, and they’ll still love you unconditionally.
In history, dogs have given their lives for their masters. ‘Police’ dogs will face an armed attacker to protect their handler and ‘Seeing Eye’ dogs will risk death or injury to steer their Charge away from a speeding car. A dog’s love for its master is pure and unquestioning. In my opinion, they deserve all the pampering they can get.
Pets, especially dogs, make us feel good. They comfort us, allow us to be ourselves and give those of us that need it, a reason for living. After all, there is always a warm welcome when you arrive home, and so deserve to be served, spoiled and looked after like a member of the family.

What are Martingale Dog Collars?

Maintenance:
Martingale dog collars are washable. Whenever the collar gets dirty, place it in a pillowcase or laundry bag and put it through the gentle cycle of your washing machine. Hang to dry.
